Candescence Unchained: seasonality meets fashion

It is a movement that looks dynamic but upon closer look, has a common theme. In other parts of the world, fashion modes come out in seasons as dictated by the weather but ultimately portray a common denomination of vibrancy through shades and colours. Here on my home continent, the seasons don't come with severe climate change except of recent. Instead, what we see is the full bloom of trees, flowers and shrubs in all their electrifying colours. Being surrounded by such natural inspiration daily has energised my splashes on canvas. Like a a pendulum that runs the clock but delivers a consistency, so I do in my modes and colours.

This series proudly displays African women as we are today. Fashionable, intrepid, and with a zeal for life. And most importantly, unbothered about an external gaze, unbothered about how we are “seen”. The paintings that comprise this series, Renascenting Africa, are for us, by us and starring us. If these paintings don’t feel “African” to the viewer, perhaps then, there are deeper internal dialogues that must take place.
