Candescence Unchained: Seasonality Meets Fashion

It is a movement that appears dynamic at first glance, yet reveals a consistent underlying theme. Elsewhere in the world, fashion evolves with the seasons, shaped by the climate, each collection marked by changing temperatures but unified by a vibrant interplay of shades and colours. Here on my home continent, our seasons are gentler, less defined by dramatic weather shifts, at least until recently. What we experience instead is a constant bloom, with trees, flowers, and shrubs erupting in electrifying colours year round. Being immersed in this natural spectacle every day fuels the energy of my canvas. Like a pendulum that powers the clock while maintaining a steady rhythm, my work follows a similar cadence, expressive yet grounded in a coherent palette and mood.

This series proudly displays African women as we are today. Fashionable, intrepid, and with a zeal for life. And most importantly, unbothered about an external gaze, unbothered about how we are “seen”. The paintings that comprise this series, Renascenting Africa, are for us, by us and starring us. If these paintings don’t feel “African” to the viewer, perhaps then, there are deeper internal dialogues that must take place.
